Dressages

Novaballet kicks off the 2009 season with Imperative Forms, a stimulating survey of young American choreographic talent in a 4-piece program of new works, expanded works, and an encore performance.

Known for his highly kinetic, physically daring and musically driven dances, Adam Hougland brings to the Tempe stage one of his first and most stylish works, the atmospheric Beyond. This piece splits the dance space into two worlds populated by bodies bound in dynamic emotional encounters. Contrasting that work will be Emery LeCrone's expanded Pulling to Break, set to Philip Glass' Violin Concerto No. 1. The first movement of this piece was developed in 2006, but this summer will be extend to the full length of the Glass concerto. As Jennifer Dunning of the New York Times puts it, "The ballet is already a delightful whole, exploring inventive partnering as well as the way spinning, full-throttle movement can echo and incorporate the planes of the space around it."

Robert Dekkers returns with AnOther, which Richard Nilsen of The Arizona Republic described as "dance of a high order." His style of exploring the architecture of relationships and human interactions will continue when he also premieres a new work.
